Mother & baby
One of the most exciting areas of research concerns the benefits of a diet rich in olive oil for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Olive oil's potential starts even before conception, boosting the success rate of IVF. In pregnancy, one study saw the risk of preeclampsia —a serious complication characterized by high blood pressure and organ damage, now the greatest risk to maternal and foetal life in the developed world - reduced by at least 20%. In other studies, higher olive oil consumption was associated with a lower risk of gestational diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disfunction. Olive oil consumption also benefitted babies themselves, with a lower risk for small- or large-for-gestational-age infants. Olive oil likely supports maternal health during pregnancy by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. After birth, its nutrients are not only passed on to the baby through breast milk, but actually concentrated there, aiding in weight gain and overall growth. It is understood that the omega-3 fatty acids present in olive oil contribute to the development of the baby's nervous system, while polyphenols boost and regulate immune function. Studies have shown lower risk of asthma in the babies of mothers who have consistently consumed olive oil throughout pregnancy. Their babies have been found to have a more developed immune system, lower risk of rhinitis and allergies. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory properties of olive oil may help alleviate discomfort and promote postpartum recovery for mothers.
